Vergie was born near Alva, Oklahoma on February 16, 1924, the daughter of George Roots and Emma Hopkins Roots. She attended South Hackberry country school and Laswell country church. She and Dewey Reed were married in Alva, Oklahoma on November 9, 1940 and had celebrated 75 years of marriage last November. Vergie was a true rancher’s wife. She and Dewey lived at the Z-Ranch and she cooked for 25 to 30 men for many years. She also tended the milk cows, chickens, guineas. She was Steve’s backup mechanic and kept Duke’s car clean. She loved doing things for and with family. Vergie and Dewey had traveled to Nashville to the Grand Old Opry and to California to see other family. They loved to go dancing, first to Capron and later to the VFW in Alva. They had pet names for each other and used them to the end – she was punk and he was honk.
Vergie was given the utmost loving care at the Attica Manor from the day she entered to her last days. She was loved.
