Cleo Dowell was born September 17, 1925 in Altus, Oklahoma and departed this life on October 2, 2015 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. As a young woman, Cleo attended Phillips University and Northwestern Oklahoma State University, completing a degree in Education. She met her husband, Jim Dowell while teaching school in Byron, Oklahoma. They were united in marriage on June 4, 1949. They lived and raised their four boys in Byron until moving to Enid, Oklahoma after their retirement.
Cleo taught English and Literature at Chaparral High School for many years. Her love of poetry was passed on to many students and family members. She was active in church from an early age and passed this passion on to others as well. She spent a great deal of her retirement entertaining her grandchildren by reading stories, playing dress up, building tents, climbing trees (into her eighties), star gazing, stringing bedrooms, playing cards and most of all by playing Pooh Stick.
Cleo was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Dowell; foster parents, Harry and Iva Wilson and one sister, Virgie Wilson.
She is survived by her sister, Marie Fetters of Pond Creek, Oklahoma; brother, James Hill of Wichita, Kansas; four sons, Hank Dowell and wife, Kaye of Guthrie, Oklahoma, John Dowell and wife, Georgia of Woodward, Oklahoma, David Dowell and wife, Peggy of Cleo Springs, Oklahoma and James Dowell and wife, Vinita of Weatherford, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Countrywood Assisted Living Center in Kingfisher, Oklahoma.
